PCB assembly starts before soldering. The assembler needs controlled files, approved components, a process suited to the package mix, and a test plan that shows whether the completed board matches the intended revision. A generic soldering sequence cannot correct missing or conflicting build information.
Release a Complete Assembly Package
Provide the fabrication data, BOM, placement data, assembly drawing, polarity and orientation references, programming files, test instructions, and revision identifier. Check the BOM before scheduling the build: part number, package, alternates, availability, and special handling can change what the assembler receives.
The files should describe the same configuration. If an issue is resolved during DFM, update the controlled data instead of relying on an email or verbal instruction. This prevents the first article and later boards from being built to different assumptions.
Match the Process to the Board
Surface-mount parts, through-hole parts, connectors, power devices, BGAs, and bottom-terminated packages may need different placement, support, profile, and inspection choices. Review pad geometry, spacing, board support, thermal mass, fiducials, panelization, and access for rework before production begins.
The correct process depends on the actual component mix and board construction. A part that is easy to hand solder may still create yield or inspection risk in the intended assembly process.
Inspect and Test Defined Failure Modes
Visual inspection can confirm many placement, polarity, and visible solder conditions. It does not prove that every hidden joint is acceptable or that the board performs under its intended load. Define what each inspection or test method is meant to establish, including the board configuration, power-up limits, expected response, and pass criteria.
Functional testing should exercise the condition that matters to the product. Record the revision, programming state, test configuration, symptom, and disposition if a board fails. That record makes later troubleshooting and change control practical.
Confirm the First Article Before Repeating the Build
Check the first board against the controlled BOM, placement data, revision marking, programming sequence, and test result before repeating the build. Early confirmation can reveal a rotation, stencil, polarity, fixture, or process assumption that would otherwise affect the whole lot.
PCB assembly becomes repeatable when the released data, assembly process, inspection evidence, and test record all refer to the same product revision.
